12 Harmonic Chaos
Review by Amanda Erickson, MML.com
A one-man-band from the suburbs of Washington D.C., 12 Harmonic Chaos brings a new light to the music scene. Described as 'psychadelic' and 'experimental' by its creator Ryan, THC sends the listener on a journey of the many eccentricities the album has to offer.
Similair to the ingenious chaos brought forth by Orbital, each track bears its own soul, whether subtle like in "Rusted Halo" and "Vade Mecum", or more piercing and almost intrusive like in "Pieces" and "Canorous Remix."
Though let it not go unsaid that this band has much more to offer than simply intricate guitar riffs and progressions hightened with eclectic ornaments. The song "Don't Lie" lends listeners to a harder, more "rock" side of their talent. Passion-driven vocals led by heartbreaking lyrics, it emulates the styling of one of Ryan's influences, Eddie Vedder of the ninety's grunge band Pearl Jam.
THC has embraced its very own style of music. One that is not only enjoyable to listen to on a Friday night while you unwind from the week, but also to have as the soundtrack to your life. To inspire things inside of you is something this band has definitely mastered flawlessly.
While listening to their album "The Residue of a Decomposed Capillary ", I found it to be a muse. Every so often, you come across a band that can stir up things in you that either you had forgotten about, or you simply never knew were within you. The tangential methods of progression lend truth to the tales of "beauty in chaos", and what makes it more interesting is that these songs will be different to each person who listens. The songs leave a lot to the imagination of the listener. What may be beautiful to one may cause heartache in another.
Accompanying the album is a four chapter story that can be found on their official page. The story gives Ryan a chance to showcase his view of his creations. A method that Poe
successfully accomplished with her album Haunted back in 2000 which ran concurrent with her brother's book "House Of Leaves
." Thoughts provoke from his rhetorical questions and creativity just as fluidly as they do from listening to the album itself.
"Since ignorance is bliss, yet knowledge is power
and absolute power corrupts absolutely,
does knowledge corrupt the minds of the flock who wonders off?"
Quote from Chapter 2, The Residue of a Decomposed Capillary.
Bottom line, 12 Harmonic Chaos is a band that deserves more than the casual listen. The passion felt throughout the album simply cannot be left unrequited.
